How To Protect Outdoor Audio/Visual In The Winter Months

In recent years, audio and video entertainment technology has benefited from several impressive ruggedization improvements. These improvements make it possible to assemble a real, permanent, or semi-permanent entertainment area outdoors. However, just because a device is designed to endure cold, wind, rain, ice, and the like, does not mean you can simply leave it outdoors and forget about it. After all, cars and trucks are designed to travel at high speeds over bumpy roads- but that does not mean care in use is not required. So, many people want to know how to protect outdoor electronics without having to bring them in when not in use.

Protecting Audio and Visual Equipment During the Winter

Of course, the first and best answer to this question has got to be, “bring it indoors.” We understand that is inconvenient, so mounting your ruggedized outdoor electronics on a mobile cart will save you trouble and likely thousands of dollars. Fortunately, this is not the only helpful answer.

Construct a Mobile Carrying Mount

One novel idea that got us rather excited is to build a panel with handles to which you would mount a flat-screen TV or other large devices. The idea is to build it in such a way that you mount the TV as if you were mounting it to a wall. Then you attach horizontal handles and vertical mounting poles. The handles are to be used to carry the device with the help of a partner, similar to how Indiana Jones might carry the Ark of the Covenant. The vertical mounting poles will be slid into a vertical slot built into a piece of furniture or PVC pipes embedded in the ground.

This is a project, of course. But it’s a nice idea. It allows you to leave devices outdoors when the weather isn’t too bad, and to bring it in when necessary.

Use Semi-Protected Areas

It would be unwise to place your expensive devices out in the open with no protection. It’s best at least use a gazebo or covered patio in the most accommodating climates. Consider building an additional wall in the direction from which wind and rain most often enter.

Aim Speakers Downward

Since it’s undesirable to cover speakers, you can aim speakers toward the ground and waterproof the back side with plastic wrap.

Cover Electronics During Harsh Weather

A tarp and a few tent spikes can be a great asset during harsh weather. Even a few trash bags can make your outdoor electronics 100% more protected than they would otherwise be.

Beware of Snow & Direct Sunlight

Snow water can make its way into even robustly waterproofed devices since it can sit on an entry point and slowly drip water into it as it melts. Direct sunlight is also a hazard to electronics and especially to flat screens. Use shade, plastic, and outdoor installations with open/close doors and panels.

Of course, you’ll need to use your imagination and ingenuity to come up with the best solutions for your outdoor audio/visual equipment needs. Here at Cathey’s Audio Visual Entertainment (C.A.V.E.), we have everything you need to assemble the ideal electronics weather protection system. Come on down today to learn more.
